June Bugs

I haven't been very exciting lately, so I haven't posted anything . . . which makes my blog boring, I know. Here are the updates.
School's out! I finished teaching on Friday. I like teaching . . . I do . . . I'm just tired. Being pregnant and teaching is . . . well, tiring. I'm recovering from being so tired and Ozzy's happy to be getting his wife back. Right baby? I'm at the school all this week packing and sorting. I don't want to store ALL my teaching stuff in my basement, so I have to go through EVERYTHING, packing what I want Ozzy to get for me on Thursday and creating a shopping mall of supplies for the other teachers to go through whenever. I'm about 2/3 done.
Baby is baking nicely. The warm weather is a little bothersome. I swell up easier and get hot a lot faster than I used to. I'm getting used to getting up in the night. I've discovered I can be up for less than an hour if I get a snack while I'm up. I'll have to post more prego pics for the fam soon.
I decided to scrapbook the baby's ultrasound pictures on Saturday night while Ozzy watched some fighting thingy. He decided to scrapbook too. This is his first scrapbook page!

He hid it under some paper in a box. It didn't quite turn out as he wanted. I told him not to worry, he can practice! I don't know if I've convinced him to turn into a scrapbooker, but hey, at least he's supportive of the habit!

Homecoming!

My sister-in-law FINALLY brings her baby home today. She was released from the hospital Monday, which means she's been getting up early and sitting in the hospital lobby all day, going in to check on her baby and feed him when they let her, and going home late at night. I told Ozzy that this is why we will be patient, uncomfortable, and rather round and WAIT until it's go time to have our baby! He had jaundice. This is not uncommon for new boys, but he had it when he was less than 24 hours old, and that makes them worried. He was under special lights all week. Then he got a blood infection. I guess this is one of the leading causes of SIDS, so good thing they found it and treated him. He was three weeks early. The doctor thought he'd be BIG, but he wasn't at out of the normal range. He weighed in at 7 lbs. 11 oz. and measured 20.5 inches. Crazy. If our baby is fitting into the standard curve, he's already over 2 lbs. and 14.5 inches! We have a hunch he might be a little on the big side. We were both big babies, Me almost 9 lbs and him a little over, and I've been measuring ahead. We'll know more on Tuesday. That's our next appointment. Woo hoo! I have to take the diabetes test. Salad for lunch and then a big sugar drink before we go in. It should be interesting!

Took my class on a field trip yesterday. The museum did lots of presentations and projects with them, but I still went home sleepy as can be. Weird.

I keep running into stuff with my belly. It's growing faster than I can get used to it, so I'm always surprised when I can't fit though a tight spot, put on my socks, wear a shirt, or balance on something. I'm like a rolly polly little buddah girl.

Best of the week

"Hey! Mrs. McDonald! You're wearing braids!"
"Yes, I am."
"Wow! You look pretty! Just like a cowgirl bride!"
"Thanks."
bet you can't guess where I had that conversation . . .

Screaming?

I felt like the absolute worst teacher ever yesterday. We had read aloud and then lined up for recess. When we got out, the teacher next door asked me if the kids were having a good day. It's spring, so they are squirmy and noisy, so I said that they weren't having the best day. She said she could tell because she heard me screaming at them before recess. I couldn't remember screaming at them . . . I knew I had to speak loudly sometimes because they were being so noisy. Then she told me to watch out because the assistant director was standing outside my door at the time, listening. All day I couldn't figure out when I was "screaming" at them.

This morning on the way to school, I figured it out.

We have read aloud right before recess. I am reading them Matilda by Roald Dahl. I like to do the voices so the kids will like listening better. I was reading the part when the Trunchbull makes Bruce Bogtrotter eat a giant chocolate cake. She barks and shouts, never talks.

I wasn't screaming at my students, but the Trunchbull was screaming at Bruce Bogtrotter!

When in doubt, ask someone under the age of ten.

I've been askedby many people how I handle the awkwardness of teaching 24 small people every day with a growing belly. Can't they tell I'm pregnant?

Actually, when I found out I was pregnant, I told them. There's some things little people have to know . . . especially when you're the PE teacher! For example, don't throw things at Mrs. McDonald's tummy, if Mrs. McDonald acts super grouchy, she is sick or tired from growing a person, and if Mrs. McDonald runs out of class, it is a bathroom emergency and take out a book and read in your seat until she gets back.

Every week they like an update about how big the baby is, what it feels like in there, and what we will name it. Whenever I see a mom, they want to look at my tummy and tell me they hear baby updates from their little one all the time. They don't ask the "how did you get a baby inside" question because this is Utah and they all have baby brothers and sisters. They know some version or another. They do silly things though.

More than once a kids has walked into class, stood with their hands on hips and said, "Wow, Mrs. McDonald. I can tell your baby is getting big because you look way fatter."

One day, after drawing the six-inch baby on the board for them, one little girl got super excited and started flapping her hands next to my tummy. "Where is it, where is it?!?" she yelled. I pointed to where it was. She hugged it and then hollered, "I love you baby!" Then she realized she'd just made a scene and clpped her hands over her mouth, giggling with the rest of the class. "I'm sorry. I just got so excited I couldn't help it!" she explained.

Another day the students were in the hallway hanging up coats and backpacks. A little girl said, not knowing I could hear, "I wonder how Mrs. McDonald GOT pregnant anyway." A boy answered, "I'm pretty sure it was something she ate."

These things I find HILLARIOUS.

things from a pencil . . .

Have you ever even heard of this?

JJ's girl came to Ozzy's parent's house last night. Sunday dinners are always at their house. Anyhow, Manda found a needle and Becky dug up some thread and a pencil and I was told to hold out my hand and relax. She stuck the needle in the pencil's eraser and wrapped the thread around her finger. The needle went around in circles, then in a straight line, then in an oval, then in a straight line, then repeated the process. This means I'm "destined" to have a girl, a boy, twins, and a boy. This would be just high-school style slumber party goofishness, except it said the EXACT same thing for my Ozzy. Weird. Just wondering what you few but faithful blog buddys thought of that one . . . I'd never even heard of it before. Could be a weird-o Utah deal.

Our heater is broken. It gets all warm and toasty and doesn't force the air out of the vents. Good thing the weather is unusually spring-like this week. The $70 an hour Lennox man is coming on Friday . . . when I can make him EARN that $70 an hour. (He'd better not answer that phone call . . . . I'm completely brutal about things like this!)

My mom is probably going to make it to the ultrasound. She's so excited that she's taking a bus. It will be fun to have her try out the guest room. Our heater will be fixed by then. Otherwise, she'd have to cuddle with Ozzy and I. No one wants that!

I'd better go on home and fire up the space heater in our room. Then I'll cook some dinner. Then I'll take a nap. Mondays are brutal. Why are the children so excited to come here when I'm not even sure I AM here?

on tummy, house, and getting back to work

Christmas vacation was fabulous. Everyone asks us what we did on our Northwest adventure. We sigh and get a dreamy look on our faces and say, "almost nothing." Could anything be better? The only stinky part of the whole thing was Delta. I think the entire corporation has suffered from head trauma, or is naturally stupid. Both our flights were delayed. Ugh. Not by days, but by enough hours that you wonder if driving would have saved some aggravation. Then, in Seattle, I noticed that almost every Delta flight was delayed. Hmmmm. We probably won't switch to Southwest, though. Having to sit in whatever is left after the stampede isn't my style. We're newlyweds. We actually still want to sit together.

We will probably close on our house at the end of next week. We will probably move in shortly thereafter. My hubby is FREAKING EXCITED about all the home improvements he wants to do. The man is even jazzed about insulation. His favorite project is the 700 or 800 square feet of unfinished basement. I hesitate to introduce him to HGTV. It could start a riot. I love that guy. Anyhow, we're just waiting on loan offers and, just to make our lives easier, the house appraised for 10,000 more than we're paying, so it should be a fairly simple deal. Between that and the fact that my husband has the credit rating of Superman, this shouldn't be too traumatic.

We had to go to work this week after nine or more, in my case days of the good life. Poor Ozzy was just about dead after work Monday. He survived Wednesday and I think the worst of the jolt back to the working world is over. I started today. Luckily, the kids were as out of sinc and tired as me, so that helped. Last year they were hyperactive after the break, so there was some definate fear this morning. They're all excited about writing a class newspaper. At least something worked. I feel like a cheater because we only have a half day tomorrow. This makes my life way easier than I deserve.

My tummy is expanding. We're in the pound a week phase of pregnancy, so I can eat now too. I don't have a fabulous appetite, but way better than before. I've discovered that my crazy confusing nightmares are from my prenatal. I was taking it before bed to avoid getting sick, but one night I got really sick anyway . . . . so the pills interrupt my sleep and make my dreams all weird. I'm trying different kinds, but I might have to start taking halves or something. We're excited because we go to the doctor next week to hear the heartbeat again. Yay! Sometimes I forget that I'm pregnant and I just think I'm getting fat. I have a good hubby who reminds me that I'm supposed to get fat. :) I'll let you know how the doctor goes next week.

A general update that is probably not very interesting

Hello!
So, no one told me that morning sickness is awful and lasts all day. I heard that is was, but no one really convinced me. Consider me convinced. Reading gives me motion sickness. I can't even correct papers. This is silly! I am living off applesauce, cold water, and saltine crackers. If I crave something, I eat that too. The weird part is, if I crave something Monday, I don't want it Tuesday. Friday it was an omlette, Saturday fish and chips, and yesterday was ramen noodles. At least the kid likes a variety. :)
I learned a good lesson. If something about your pregnancy is odd, ask your mom. It will save you some stress, since pregnant ladies stress about stuff.
My husband is a good one, though. He takes care of me and runs for whatever the craving is. Sweet, huh?
Hey, only 17 days till I'll be in Seattle for Christmas! Yay! Home for a green, warm, and probably lazy Christmas.
The Primary Nazi has finally given up I think. I don't mind handing out the roll papers (if I'm not too ill), filling out the agenda, and other stuff. She's finally given up on me calling half the ward to remind them of stuff she called them about yesterday or going to two hour planning meetings . . . where we just hear what her plans are. :) This is a positive development.
I go to the doctor on the 11th and then actually meet with him the 12th. My sweet hubby is coming with me on the 12th. He thinks maybe he'll wear his uniform for impact . . .
By the way, mom . . . great gift for him. He'll love it!

Random stuff for your enjoyment . . .

First, a funny story from school. You know you love these. It was the Halloween party (I know, so delayed, but I keep giggling whenever I remember it!) and a mom came to help and brought her little toddler too. She said she asked her daughter what she wanted to be. The conversation went something like this:
"Do you want to be a princess?" "NO!" "Do you want to be a fairy?" "NO!" "How about a ballerina?" "NO!" "What do you want to be?" "A CHICKEN!"
tee hee!
This is my favorite. So, I had a fluffly white chicken with red legs, yellow feet, a beak, the works in my room. HILLARIOUS!
Second, a trip you should take in the winter if it's at all reaonable for you. A long time ago I took this trip with roommates and it was fun! If we find that I'm not pregnant, we're taking the trip as a consolation prize! Book a not too cheap hotel (that was our one big mistake) for a Friday night. You can go for Saturday night too. Drive up to Lava Hot Springs after work and eat at that cool pizza place. Go in the hot pools and stay out rediculously late. Go sleep in your hotel. Wake up and be lazy. Yay!
Third, Thanksgiving. CRAZY plans! Wednesday I'm off work. I make pies. Two dutch apple. I told husband that's what I was brinning to Thanksgiving and he said no. I made that pie for him for our first date and he loves it. I have to make two. Thursday afternoon, Thanksgiving at his Grandma's. Thursday night, Thanksgiving at his mom's. Friday morning, take a pregnancy test and go shopping. Get home quick to see my family who is coming down to visit. Saturday, sleep. :)
Fourth, trees. I LOVE real Christmas trees. My family never had a fake one. Husband HATES christmas trees. All of them. Since he loves me, he bought me a pre-lit artificial tree Saturday. It's a good middle-of-the-road option. Since he HATES them, he has to do Christmas trees like taking off a band aid. Hold your breath and rip. I have a Christmas tree in my living room! I think it's funny! Oh well, it's only two weeks early. :)
